The GVRD

visual archive ongoing
A child of the suburbs of Vancouver, British Columbia. This is my home. The set includes photos from the Greater Vancouver area, including Surrey, Delta, Richmond, Burnaby, and New Westminster. It seems many photographers in the area concentrate on the city of Vancouver rather than the outlying areas, that have just as much, if not more, diversity and interesting sights to capture.
Milano

italia design 2008
Finally we made it to Milan. At this point, most of our time was spent preparing or conducting interviews, or walking to/from those interviews. Fortunately I still managed to find time to capture the city, and thankfully so. Milan, being so far north as to be on the European continent, felt significantly more European than the other Italian cities we'd seen.
Firenze

italia design 2008
The third leg of the SIAT Italia Design Field Study brought us to Florence. Renaissance city by nature, it was a wonderful place in which to learn, explore, and reflect. Bicycles gave us a chance to cool down while getting a bit of exercise, but they also made some photo opportunities more difficult to come by (however, with temperatures in the mid to high 30's, we weren't about to complain!)
Toscana

italia design 2008
After Rome, came the Tuscan countryside. With our base in Dolciano, in what was once the residence of the Duke of Tuscany, we ventured out on day-trips to surrounding hilltowns for research. These included Pienza, Pitigliano, Siena, and Montepulciano, with smaller stops here and there. After the hustle and bustle of Rome, Tuscany was a welcome retreat.
Roma

italia design 2008
A member of the SIAT Italia Design Field School in 2008, part of the in-field group assignment was to create a fully-featured slideshow for each of the main centres we visited. My approach with Rome was to capture the angles or moments that the other students may not have seen, with an emphasis on the graphic qualities of photography, and emotional, rather than realistic colour. We lived down the street from the Coloseo. We played frisbee in the Circo Massimo. It was amazing.
IDEO 10faces
info model 2006
The week following the earlier IDEO motion model, we were assigned the task of reading Kelley's "The 10 Faces of Innovation" and constructing a motion model, pushing the interactivity further than the previous week. As well, we were required to present 3 processes for future design project concepts. Due to the amount of work for this one course, I again decided to complete the motion model on my own, with some new inspiration - the ViewFinder!
IDEO mogfx
info model 2006
In a 3rd-year design course in 2006, teams of 4 were instructed to read "The Art of Innovation" by Tom Kelley, General Manager of IDEO, and then construct a static, and a digital information model within the same week, to be presented during the next class session. It was a significant challenge considering the full-time course-load many of us were committed to, however we were more than ready for it. Extra motivation was added when the professor said he would send the best one or two models to IDEO.
rboVision

daily photoblog 2006-7
In 2006 I decided to begin a daily photoblog. The photos weren't always posted on the day they were taken, but there was always a new photo up every day at midnight. Although sometimes it was a challenge to stay creative and keep the project going, I knew it would be worth it in the end - and after doing it for a little over a year, I can certainly say I'm pleased by the collection of images I created.
Boulevards
film study 2004
Created for a second year film course in 2004, this was my attempt to portray the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, BC (known as the poorest postal code in the country) in as much colour as possible; focusing on sounds and imagery rather than politics. However, as you can likely tell by the second half of the film, my sheltered, suburban, 2nd-year self felt somewhat negatively inspired by the people who turned up in the location while filming - with a $3000 camera on-loan from the library, wrapped in a pair of old, ragedy pj pants...
Transit
film&sound study 2002
This is my experience of public transit in the Metro Vancouver area, as created for a first year new media course in 2002. The soundtrack was a project for the first part of the course in sound editing, and the video was then filmed and pieced together with the sound a few weeks later to form a sort of non-linear narrative (well, as much as it could be when linear public transportation is the focus).
...You'll need to turn the volume up a bit.
