Online Photography Community 2007-2008

In a 400-level, 2-semester Design Studio course, my team and I created a prototype online community which was centered around sharing photographic techniques and tutorials. This was the final result of a semester of processing, where we defined the project and narrowed the scope down from the original concept of a live, map-based photo sharing network accessed through digital cameras, and a semester of prototyping, where we designed and built the online community itself.

Process Semester

During the processing semester, we created a number of artifacts to help us define our project. Two such artifacts were a concept map for each teammate, and initial brainstorm ideas. Below are a couple of the artifacts I created.

Final Process Presentation

F/stop Process 2007

This presentation discusses the techniques and methods we used in order to go about defining our ideas, our target audience, similar products that were already on the market, the sort of technology and other resources we would require, and so on.

Throughout the processing half of the course, we were reminded that the prototyping/development half would be soon approaching, and we wanted to ensure our prototype would be both realistic and achievable, yet still something that would push our limits as creative individuals.

The project was originally named 'F/stop' however we found numerous sites on the internet with the same name, so my suggestion of 'Weviu' was later selected as the final project name. I designed and wrote all the content for this presentation.

Final Prototype

The final prototype was a fully operating site with around 40 members and hundreds of photographs. Unfortunately it was taken offline late last year when a way to share costs for the hosting and domain couldn't be agreed upon. We as a team decided it was a project that could still be communicated through static images and archives. When a saved version of the final site is provided from the teammate who downloaded it, I will make sure to upload it here so you may get an idea of the usable form. I designed, implemented, and modified/customized our installation of Dolphin by Boonex, the free community website software we decided to use. Please note, these images are quite large.
